On January 20, DeepSeek launched the R1 model, which achieved similar performance to Open AI’s GPT-o1 with a tenth of its cost. A week later, it quickly released a new model “Janus-pro” for image generation and visual understanding.

Unlike the closed-source strategy of Silicon Valley giants, DeepSeek chose to open source. This “technological equality” is reshaping the global AI innovation and accelerated technological iteration.

US firms from Nvidia to Microsoft and Amazon embrace DeepSeek’s AI model despite scrutiny.

On January 27, DeepSeek topped the free app download rankings of Apple’s App Store in China and the United States, surpassing ChatGPT. Chinese netizens quickly flocked to Deepseek’s app, using it to perform unique gameplay such as fortune-telling, writing poetry and seeking customized suggestions for personal improvement.

On Chinese social media XIAOHONGSHU, the hashtag #deepseek already gain 380M views.
